From Art to Occupational Therapy

Sabrina Fernandez

Sabrina Fernandez, 26, from Deltona, has artistic talent that fueled her first college degree, a BA from Stetson University. But that talent also applies to her desire to improve the lives of the injured and physically challenged through occupational therapy, an associate degree she received this May from DSC.

An Outstanding Student winner at the college’s 2014 awards ceremony, Fernandez applies her passion for art and health to college, to work and volunteering. Seeing classroom walls that lacked the OT story, she spent three months creating a 36x36 oil painting - which she donated to the OT program. “I wanted other new students to ‘see’ what OT represents.”

Realizing she needed to add more - and different - education to get into the workforce, she shadowed occupational therapy assistants to see if it would work for her. She saw their application of arts and crafts to Sabrina Fernandezre-connect people to what they love and gain confidence to resume as normal a life as possible. Like art therapy, Fernandez plans to apply her art when possible through occupational therapy with her patients.

Finishing her clinical internships before graduation, she’s excited to start her new career and see what’s next.
