Student Life Skills

Getting through College Composition (ENC1101) can be challenging for some. However, Daytona State has come up with a plan called Learn to SOAR that can help students overcome academic barriers and succeed in ENC1101 and beyond.

What is Learn to SOAR?

SOAR stands for Students Optimizing Academic Resources, and a new course called College Resources (SLS1101) will help students do just that!  It has been created as part of Daytona State's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) initiative, which seeks to foster the academic success of our students. SLS1101 is a one-credit hour, seven-week co-requisite to ENC1101 - an important core requirement taken by all degree-seeking students. Students will learn how to effectively use the college's Academic Support CenterLibrary and College Writing Center.

Benefits of SLS1101

Research shows that students who value and know how to effectively use academic resources are better motivated, have more success in their classes, and are more likely to complete their degree programs. Additionally, the resources covered in the course provide practical application extending beyond the classroom, thus, fulfilling Daytona State College's Core Value:

  • There is no value more important than the success of our students. Our main goal is to provide students with the skills, knowledge, and drive to succeed in the classroom, the workplace, and in life.
