How do I apply for VA benefits?
You must apply for all chapters of VA education benefits at https://www.vets.gov/education/apply.
It can take the VA 30 days to process your education benefit application. After you
receive your Certificate of Eligibility you will need to provide DSC with a copy,
then request that your enrollment at DSC be certified to the VA by submitting a Veteran’s
Deferment Form. VA benefits cannot be processed without this request. The Veteran
Deferment is done through your Student portal under the home tab at the bottom of
the page under “additional links”.
What is VA Vocational Rehabilitation?
VA Vocational Rehabilitation serves students with service-connected disabilities who
need to change job fields in order to accommodate their disability. Department of
Veterans Affairs pays for tuition, books, supplies, and other items necessary for
attendance at DSC to achieve this. The Vocational Rehabilitation Program is designed
to assist veterans toward a goal in finding suitable employment. More information
is available here: VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment.
How does Deferment of Tuition work?
Per Florida Statute 1009.27: “Any veteran or other eligible student who receives benefits
under chapter 30, chapter 31, chapter 32, chapter 33, chapter 34, or chapter 35 of
Title 38, U.S.C., or chapter 106 of Title 10, U.S.C., is entitled to one deferment
each academic year and an additional deferment each time there is a delay in the receipt
of benefits.” Veteran deferments are processed by Daytona State College, Office of
Veteran Affairs. Click here for more info. It is important to note that a deferment
is not a method of payment but allows us to extend the tuition due date giving the
VA or student an extended amount of time to send payment. The student is responsible
for payment in the event that the VA does not pay.
How do I change my enrollment status and attendance?
All changes in student’s enrollment/classes need to be sent to the DSC Veterans Affairs
Office immediately. Students can notify the VA office of withdrawal by submitting
a new deferment form on the student portal.
Such changes can result in incorrect payments from the VA and result in the student owing money back to the VA. Withdrawals and grades of "W" are retroactive to the beginning of the term, and the VA does not pay for courses in which the student receives a grade of "W."
