“Educating Women – Empowering Women” luncheon recognizes National Women’s History Month

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Feb. 20, 2012) – The Daytona State College Women’s Center and its advisory board are pleased to announce their annual luncheon recognizing National Women’s History Month. Scheduled for Thursday, March 29, from noon to 1:30 p.m., the luncheon will be held in the Hosseini Center (bldg. 1200), on the Daytona Beach Campus, located at 1200 West International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL.

This year’s luncheon honors local women who have made a difference in people’s lives. Sharing personal stories on how education has empowered them to be 21st century leaders, honored guests include: Dr. Carol Eaton, president of Daytona State College; Dr. Wendy Libby, president of Stetson University; Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed, president of Bethune-Cookman University; Dr. Margaret Smith, superintendent of Volusia County Schools; and Janet Valentine, superintendent of Flagler County Schools.

According to the website for the National Women’s History Month Project, women now outnumber men in American colleges nationwide. This reversal of the gender gap is a very recent phenomenon. The fight to learn was a valiant struggle waged by many tenacious women — across years and across cultures. After the American Revolution, the notion of education as a safeguard for democracy created opportunities for girls to gain a basic education. However, that education was based largely on the premise that, as mothers, they would nurture the minds and bodies of the (male) citizens and leaders. This idea that educating women meant educating mothers endured in America for many years at all levels of education.

National Women's History Month, designated by Joint Resolutions of the House and Senate and proclamations by six American presidents, is an opportunity to learn about and honor women's achievements today and throughout history. Join us on March 29 as we celebrate the achievements of five outstanding women in our community.

The luncheon is open to the public. Seating is limited, reservations and payment must be made by March 22. Cost for the luncheon is $25 per person; proceeds benefit the Women’s Center.
