Beginning his twenty-eighth season as a professional swimming coach, Don Gibb comes to Daytona State after spending the last twenty seasons in the Division I collegiate ranks.
A graduate of Tate High School (Gonzales, Florida), Daytona Beach Community College, and the University of Florida, Coach Gibb has experienced competition and coaching at every level in our sport.
As a collegiate swimmer for the Gators, Gibb won the Southeastern Conference title in the 100 freestyle in 1982 and went on to win an NCAA title with Florida in 1983. He was also a USA National Champion, a co-American Record Holder in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay and was ranked in the top 25 in the world two years in a row. He also participated in the USA Masters National Championships winning the 100 freestyle in his age group.
As a coach, Gibb has had the good fortune to work with elite coaches such as former UF Head Men’s and Women’s Coach and USA Olympic Coach Randy Reese, former UF Women’s Head Coach Mitch Ivey, former UF Men’s Head Coach and NCAA Coach of the Year Skip Foster, and elite coaches Gary Butts and Ralph Crocker at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale. All these individuals had a direct impact on Coach Gibb and how he has evolved into an elite coach.
Some of his coaching highlights include: USA Junior National Champions, USA Senior National Champions, US Open Champions, Atlantic Coast Conference Champions, Southeastern Conference Champions, and NCAA Division I National Champions.
At the international level, Gibb has coached fourteen different Olympians from ten different countries. He has also been a member of the coaching staffs for Venezuela, Hungary, Trinidad, and South Africa participating in the Pan American Games, World Championships, Pan Pacific Games, and the Commonwealth Games. In 1998, he was also an assistant coach for the World All-Stars which won the gold medal in the Goodwill Games in Long Island, New York.
Gibb began his professional career in 1985 at the Nashville Aquatic Club where he developed several age group swimmers into National Top 16 qualifiers as well as Junior and Senior National performers and produced a Masters National Champion.
Since arriving at Daytona State, his swimmers, at the 2011 National Championships, won three individual events (women’s 100 fly, men’s 200 fly, men’s 500 free) and had several earn athletic scholarships to continue their athletic pursuits.
And at the 2012 National Championships in Fort Pierce, FL, Daytona State swimmers won five events (women’s 100 free, women’s 200 free, women’s 200 back, women’s 800 free relay, and the men’s 1650 free). The women’s team was also recognized as an overall CSCAA Scholastic All American Team (over 3.0 gpa). Seven women and four men were awarded individual CSCAA Scholar All American honors as well including Samantha and Sara Akoubian earning a 4.0 & 3.98 overall in their two seasons at Daytona State College.

Caitlin Iversen

Caitlin Iversen enters her second season with the Falcon swimming squad. She will serve as Coordinator/Assistant Coach for the Daytona State College Swimming Program. She will assist with recruiting future student-athletes as well as on deck practice and coaching. Under her first year, Caitlin helped lead the Falcons to a second place overall finish for both men and women at the NJCAA competition. She is excited to see these teams continue to succeed.
Caitlin came to Daytona State after graduating from the University of Arizona in December of 2010 where she completed four years of swimming under Head Coach Frank Busch. Caitlin was able to be a part of two Pacific-10 Conference Championships, as well as an NCAA National Championship Team. She competed at four NCAA Championship Meets and is a 6-time All American. She also competed in the 2008 US Olympic Trials and placed ninth in the 200 meter backstroke.
Caitlin was born and raised in Denver, Colorado and has been swimming competitively since the age of 8. She has one older sister who also swam at the University of California Los Angeles. Caitlin is currently competing in Crossfit competitions.
