From Surf Fishing to Fishing for Cyber Crime

James Fischer

James Fischer and fellow student made an LED cube, 8x8x8x8, for Daytona State’s 2014 STEM Expo.

Ardent surf fisher and Daytona Beach native James Fischer saw a different future when he started drawing houses with Auto CAD in his teens. Now, that future view has positioned him for a lucrative and innovative career in cyber security.

As a kid working with his father in home construction, Fischer came to realize he preferred drawing the houses they worked on to installing drywall. That led him to learn computer drafting in high school (Seabreeze).

James FischerBut it was through high-tech friends earning great salaries in software R&D that he saw the opportunities for a career in computer science, especially information technology. His interest led him to Daytona State, starting with certificates, which further fueled his excitement over the path he could take toward innovation and constant learning.

Fischer, about to turn 22, graduated this May with three certificates for: Information Technology Support Specialist, Network Support Technician and Microcomputer Repairer/Installer; and his associate of science degree in Networking Systems Technology. He’s already begun his bachelor’s degree in information technology (BSIT) and plans to go on for his master’s.

“I love how fast the technology changes - from month to month; you have to constantly be learning,” he says. His education in cyber security and cyber forensics has changed how he sees everyday life. “I drive by a (fast-food place) and all I can think of is how their app to pay ahead is ripe for cyber crime.”

His talent and drive led him to be chosen as a mentor for cyber security classes at DSC this summer, though he insists he’ll always find time to enjoy his favorite beaches and surf fishing.
