Paul Capps, 2015
- Mathematics Professor
- DSC employee since 2002
Degrees and schools where awarded: Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Teaching, University of Florida
Career/Professional honors: I was promoted to Professor in 2008.
Outside interests: I have a wife, a son about to graduate from high school and a daughter in the 8th grade. I used to like reading and music before the rest of my life happened.
What did you do prior to joining Daytona State College? I was an mathematics instructor at Bethune-Cookman University for seven years. Prior to that, I worked for two years on a route delivery truck for Tombstone/DiGiorno Pizza.
What professional projects are you working on right now? I am working on a “Flipping the Classroom” project with QuESST.
What has been the most rewarding thing about your Daytona State College experience? It is the people, the students (well, most of the students), the staff, administration and particularly my fellow faculty. I am not sure what other job would involve working with so many wonderful people.
What is one goal you still hope to achieve in your career? I am applying for Senior Professor this year.
In life? See my children be happy and self-sufficient adults.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten? Don’t sweat the small stuff. (Everyone in the Math Department is now laughing.) I didn’t say that I follow the advice.
One thing people are surprised to find out about me is: Besides the route truck thing that I mentioned before, I also used to ride motorcycles.
Last book read: “Talking God,” a Navajo Police mystery by Tony Hillerman
If they could bottle your personality what would the label read? Honest to a fault. . . annoyingly to a fault.
Who are the four people in the history of the world you most admire? If I was trying to impress people: Abraham Lincoln, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Friedrich Gauss and Harriet Tubman. Reality: Paul Simon, Steve Martin, Cary Grant, Steven Spielberg (Turns out I just like to be entertained).
The Daytona State of Mind to me means you bring the work and we will provide the opportunity!
