What did you do prior to joining Daytona State College? Instructor at Seminole State (Community) College. Many years prior: worked on tour for the band Earth, Wind, and Fire.
What professional projects are you working on right now? Drafting an annual SACSCOC Impact Report in preparation for the 5th year report.
What has been the most rewarding thing about your Daytona State College experience? Helping students achieve their goals.
What is one goal you still hope to achieve in your career? Take a book I’ve written on vocabulary acquisition, based on morphology, and if/when time permits, make it marketable to a broader audience. For five years I’ve used the workbook in class and gave it to students as a freebie. Hopefully the time will come when it can be properly published.
In life? Travel to Hawaii and Alaska—the only states I haven’t yet visited.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten? “Make no important, life-shaping decision quickly or impulsively. And when in doubt, stall for time. Time shows up things that were previously unknown.”
One thing people are surprised to find out about me is: As a young man in search of adventure, I bought a backpack and a one-way ticket to Europe—and returned to the USA seven and a half years later.
Last book read: Choosing to See, by Mary Beth Chapman
If they could bottle your personality what would the label read? Adventurously curious.
Who are the four people in the history of the world you most admire? Jesus Christ, through whom I learned to value the eternal over the temporal, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jim Elliot, Eric Liddell—all who modeled this value.
The Daytona State of Mind to me means providing opportunities to achieve one’s goals.
