DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Oct. 5, 2009) – Two major performances from the University of Central Florida’s College of Arts and Humanities are coming to Daytona State College’s newly acquired News-Journal Center. The first is the Gilbert and Sullivan classic The Pirates of Penzance, which tells the story of a young pirate apprentice who has a surprise in store for him when he ends his indentured period.
Pirates will be performed in the Gillespy Theater Nov. 13, 14 and 15. As a welcoming gesture to former season subscribers of Seaside Music Theater, all tickets to Pirates will be free of charge.
In April, the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, in partnership with UCF, will present Schoolhouse Rock Live! in the Gillespy Theater. Based on the Emmy® Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series, the performance teaches history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever songs such as “Unpack Your Adjectives” and “Do The Circulations.” These performances are scheduled for morning school shows the week of April 26 - 30 with public weekend performances on Saturday, May 1, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, May 2, at 2 p.m.
“It’s great that UCF is making plans for these two productions in the News-Journal Center,” stated Glyn Johnston, vice president of Marketing and Events at Daytona State College. “Both performances will bring in great audiences and will certainly give UCF and their productions a strong presence in the Volusia and Flagler markets.”
“One of UCF’s goals is to be America’s leading partnership university, and we’re pleased to bring two fantastic stage productions to Daytona Beach,” said UCF Conservatory Theatre Chair/Artistic Director Christopher Niess. “Pirates is a wonderful rollicking vehicle to showcase the energy of our burgeoning student artists, and Orlando Shakespeare Theater’s Schoolhouse Rock Live! is sure to delight kids of all ages.”
