Daytona State hosts NJCAA women’s golf championship

DAYTONA BEACH, FL. (May 13, 2010) - A total of 118 golfers representing 38 colleges from across the United States will compete for top team and individual titles at the 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship to be held May 17-20 at LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach.

The tournament is hosted by the 2003, 2004 and 2005 National Champions, the Daytona State College Lady Falcons golf team.  Lady Falcons clinch title by 60 strokes

With five team players currently ranked in the top 10 of the NJCAA scoring statistics, all eyes will be on the Lady Falcons as they seek to regain the NJCAA title that was won last year by Redlands Community College (El Reno, OK).

Of the 38 colleges represented, 20 have full teams and there are an additional 27 individual players.

“I know we have a great opportunity to finish our year with a national championship,” commented Lady Falcons Coach, Laura Brown. “This team has been so impressive all year and they are very prepared for this tournament. They have so much confidence after winning six out of 11 tournaments and they have six individual titles among them as well. Currently all of our top five players are ranked in the top 10 in the country which shows how deep the team is. Every single one of these players has significantly contributed to the success of the team this year and they are all excited to begin play on Monday.”

The Lady Falcons team is comprised of five student-athletes – two sophomores and three freshmen. Returning players, Jennifer Gartin, Port St. Lucie, FL, and Ashley Mooney, Port St. Lucie, FL, will be joined by new players, Mitsuki Katahira, Japan; Ericka Schneider, Bradenton, FL; and Amy West, Valrico, FL. Freshmen Cassie Cleary, Punta Gorda, FL, completes the roster as an individual player.

Practice rounds begin Sunday, May 16 on the prestigious Legends Course.
