DAYTONA BEACH, FL (May 11, 2010) – Joining the ranks of other Daytona State College alums who have distinguished themselves in their chosen field of science, Therese M. Jeter was recently presented with the 2010 Margaret Crumley Award for Distinguished Achievement in Science.
As an outstanding biology student Jeter received her associate of arts degree from Daytona State in 2006. Starting her college studies armed with a GED, Jeter soon found her passion for science and discovered that a career in medicine was entirely possible – something that she hadn’t even dreamed of when living on the streets at age of 15. About to graduate in May 2010 from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor of science in Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Jeter continues to work her way through college and is gaining valuable experience in forensics laboratory research. In addition to excelling academically, Jeter has distinguished herself through countless hours of volunteering and extra-curricular activities: President of UCF Women’s Rugby Team, President of UCF Clinical Anatomy & Physiology Club, UCF Concert Band, Director of Food for Rock for Hunger, student instructor for Anatomy, Physiology & Microbiology, and a high school science fair judge.

According to Jeter, “A career in medicine will encompass my strongest qualities: hunger for knowledge, experience, and a chance to help others.”
The annual award was first presented in 2001 and honors alum who achieved an associate degree from the College of Science at Daytona Beach Community College. Mrs. Crumley established this award to honor her son John and husband Thomas.
Award recipients are nominated and selected by faculty of the Daytona State College Science Department, and in addition to having attended Daytona State must be working in (or retired from) a science-related field, used scientific knowledge to improve their community, and have distinguished themselves in their chosen field of science.
