According to the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL), more than 93 million American adults have Basic or Below Basic literacy skills that limit their ability to advance at work and in education, help their children with school work, interact with their health care professionals, and participate fully in their communities. Daytona State’s School of Adult Education provides free and convenient classes in Daytona Beach, DeLand, Deltona, New Smyrna Beach and Flagler/Palm Coast. With flexible day, afternoon, evening and online classes (for those who qualify) that start weekly and year round, students can work on basic reading and math skills, earn their high school diploma or GED, or develop their English language skills.

“Over the last three years, more than 4,000 adults have earned a GED or high school diploma at Daytona State. This includes nearly 1,000 students who have transitioned to college and vocational credit classes after completing our Adult Education program,” states Katrina Bell, dean, School of Adult Education at Daytona State. “We witness many success stories such as one family where a daughter inspired her father to return to school after spending 20 years in the workforce and he’s now completing prerequisites for the LPN Nursing program. He, in turn, motivated his other daughter who recently earned her GED and transitioned to college level courses. These are real people whose lives have changed as a result of access to adult education. We look forward to sharing other success stories during the open house event.”
