Unemployment  The U.S. unemployment rate fell slightly from 9.5 percent June 2010 to the current 9.1 percent for June 2011. Although both Volusia (11 percent) and Flagler (14.6 percent) counties continue to have double digit unemployment rates Volusia County rate dropped slightly below the state average (Florida 11.1 percent) for June 2011. Port Orange and Ormond Beach are the only two cities in Volusia County where the unemployment rates is lower that the state and national rate (9.1 percent). The cities of Daytona Beach, DeLand and Deltona all show unemployment rates higher than the county and state. Annual Average Wages  The average annual wage for Florida workers has increased from $39,746 in 2007 to $41,577 in 2010 according to the preliminary data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Palm Beach county is in the #1 position showing the highest average annual wage ($45,823) in the state amongst the 67 counties. There are only six counties with the annual average wage higher than the state which includes Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, Duval, Hillsborough, Broward and Brevard consecutively. For the second year Volusia County ranked 33rd in the state for highest average annual wage of $33,728. Flagler County moved up from 52nd in 2009 to the 50th position in 2010 with an average annual wage of $30,852. 2010 Census Race and Ethnicity Population The overall population in Volusia County grew 10.4 percent in the last decade with a current 494,593 population. The Hispanic population (55,217) is the second largest demographic in Volusia County. Almost half 41.7 percent of the Black population in Volusia County (51,791) is located in Daytona Beach. Deltona remains the most populous city in Volusia County with an estimated 85,182. The southwest region of the county experienced the most population growth with an increase of 29,403.

Flagler County continues to be the fastest growing county with a 47.9% increase in the last decade a current 95,696 population. U.S. population  U.S. population grew from 281,421,906 to 308,745,538 in 2010. This is a 9.7 percent growth rate, the second-slowest of the past century (following the 1930s).  Regional growth rates Northeast: 3.2%, Midwest: 3.9%, South: 14.3% and West: 13.8%.

State growth rates  Eight states gained congressional seats. Texas gained the most (four).  Florida gained two. The largest growth rate was in Nevada (35.1%). The only declines were in Michigan (0.6%) and Puerto Rico (2.2%).

The most populous states, in order, are: California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois.  Florida's population has increased from 15,982,378 in 2000 to 18,801,310 in 2010. This is a 17.6% growth rate.
