Since the mid 1990’s the Daytona State College has been involved in various aspects of international development projects including consulting, contract training, curriculum development, advising, and various related other activities. These projects have been coordinated by the Office of Global Affairs and International Education in cooperation with the college’s Center for Business and Industry (CBI) and the Florida Resource Center (FRC). In cooperation with the CBI, FRC, college faculty, staff and programs and other outside agencies and associations, the Office of Global Affairs and International Education has administered several recent international education grants and contracts including:
Universidad Don Bosco, El Salvador - 1996-1999 - Funded by the Kreditanstalt Fur Wideraufbau (KFW), a German government social development agency. Daytona State as part of Community Colleges for International Development (CCID) initiative as the lead institution for this project to assist the university in restructuring much of their internal functions including: administration, academics, student services, marketing, information services and other related activities. Daytona State’s Florida Resource Center was also apart of this project utilizing the DACUM (Developing a Curriculum) process to assist the University in developing curriculum and strategic planning.
Yokagawa Electric, Tokyo, Japan - Summer 1997-1998 -Trained corporate mid-level managers in English and U.S. management techniques.
Ministry of Finance, Thailand - Spring 1997-1998 - Trained mid-level managers in English and U.S. management and financial practices.
HEART, The National Training Agency (NTA), Kingston, Jamaica - Summer, 1998 - Daytona State faculty provided hospitality management training at HEART, NTA property at Runaway Bay HEART Country Club, St. Ann. The training focused on modern management practices, front desk operations, and inventory issues. The project was cosponsored by the Florida Caribbean Institute (a joint venture of the State of Florida, Florida International University and Daytona State) and CIBE.
USAID/University Liaison Office/American Association of Community Colleges - Workforce Development Partnerships - 1998-2000 - This project was a partnership with the Universidad Regiomontana in Monterrey, Mexico to develop import/export curriculum focused on the NAFTA Corridor, as well as to develop a long-term linkage with the university through student, faculty, and staff exchanges and other related activities. The Florida Resource Center was also involved in the project to assist in developing curriculum.
Curriculum Development Center, Public Authority for Applied Education and Training - State of Kuwait - July - August, 1999 - The CIBE, coordinating with the Center for Business and Industry and the Florida Resource Center, implemented a curriculum development training program for 23 educators from the State of Kuwait utilizing the DACUM process. The focus of the program was to train the participants how to implement the DACUM process in curriculum development and they, in turn, will be training their faculty and staff in the use of the DACUM, a train the trainer program. They were accompanied by their families, bringing the total to 73 participants.
Tertiary Education Linkage Program, USAID/United Negro College Fund – Project EXCEL: Excellence Through Cooperative Educational Linkages – Vista University, South Africa – July 1, 2000 – June 30, 2003. A curriculum development project focusing on HIV/AIDS education and prevention programs implemented by a consortium including the University of Central Florida, Bethune-Cookman College and Daytona State.
Sir Arthur Lewis Community College – Castries, St. Lucia – November, 2003 – In cooperation with the OIA, The Florida Caribbean Institute and the Florida Resource Center, Daytona State conducted a DACUM program for training facilitators in St. Lucia and created a profile and curriculum for a Community Health Nurse program at the college.
Developing a community college (Instituto Técnico Comunitario) in the Dominican Republic – Fall, 2002 – Present. Working with the Fundacíon Global Democracia y Desarollo, the Eastern Santo Domingo Businessmen’s Association and now with the Government of Santo Domingo, President Leonel Fernández, the Secretary of State for Higher Education, Science and Technology as well as other government agencies. Assisting the government to develop a community college system represented in 5 regions, including Eastern Santo Domingo. The activities include the developing of curriculum, training of faculty and staff, and making recommendations for the buildings, technology and equipment and all other aspects in developing a community college system. In January, 2007 the college received a $1.78 million contract from the Government of the Dominican Republic (DR) through the Office of the President for the project. The funds are provided by an Inter-American Bank loan to the government of the DR. The groundbreaking ceremony occurred in August 2, 2005 anticipating the opening date in the Summer of 2007. This project is being led by Yvette Lopez the Director, International Liaison && Special Projects.
Developing a community college type system in Bogotá, Colombia – Fall 2003 to the present. Daytona State is the lead institution for the Community Colleges for International Development project to develop a community college type system for the city of Bogotá in cooperation with the city government agency Accíon Communal.
Digital Media Training Program – Tyrone-Donegal Partnership – Wider Horizons Foundation, Republic of Ireland – April – June, 2005, 2006 and 2007 – 10 week 236 hour training program for 19 Protestant and Catholic students from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in digital media with a 122 hour component at the public television station of Daytona State, Daytona State TV - WCEU Channel 15 and 114 contact hours with the Visual Arts faculty.
Repositioning of the Bahamas Technical Vocational Institute (BTVI) – Fall 2006 – Present – Daytona State in cooperation with the Government of the Bahamas, Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labor and Workforce Training will be receiving a $1.05 million 3 year contract by June, 2007 funded by the Inter-American Development Bank through the Government of the Bahamas to restructure the BTVI to offer associate degrees and high level vocational, certificate, continuing, distant and college prep education.
North American Mobility Program in Higher Education – October 1996 – October 2000; October 2003 – October 2007 – Daytona State along with sister colleges in the US, Canada and Mexico was the lead institution in two NAMP programs funded by the Funding for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, Department of Education. The first grant was in computer engineering technology and international business and the most recent in hospitality and tourism management. During the 2 projects over 47 students in each program studied in the US, Canada and Mexico for up to one semester, Web sites were developed, faculty and staff exchanges occurred, long-term relationships were instituted and curriculum was developed.
Community College Summit Initiative Program – June 2007 – December 2008 – Daytona State as part of a Community Colleges for International Development $3 million 3 year contract with the US Department of State will host up to 15 students from 6 countries, including South Africa, Egypt, Indonesia, Turkey, Brazil, and Pakistan for a certificate program in hospitality management.
