October 14, 2014 – Jacksonville, FL: The Daytona State Women’s Golf Team finished 4th in the JU Classic Golf Invitational at Marsh Landing Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
With a team score of 900(298-295-307), the Lady Falcons finished 4th, 26 shots behind tournament winner Coastal Carolina University. The Lady Falcons finished 3 shots behind 2nd place team, Troy University and 1 shot back of University of North Florida.
The Falcons were led by sophomore Tiffany Chan who posted scores of 69-72-73 which was good enough for 2nd place individually. Chan was in a battle for first place honors all day and came up 1 shot shy of another individual victory. She had a putt on the final hole of play to force a playoff that barely missed.
Other finishers for Daytona State include freshman Kathleen Duperval, who finished in a tie for 13th with a 54 hole total of 224 (75-72-77), freshman Ji Sun Kang who finished tied for 39th at 232 (80-75-77), sophomore Whitney Stevenson finished tied for 48th at 235 (74-76-85), sophomore Courtney Cobb came in tied for 53rd at 236 (80-76-80) and freshman Michelle Hawkins tied for 69th at 246 (82-81-83).
“I think our 4th place finish was a little disappointing for the players, as they had been in 2nd most of the tournament. They didn’t finish strong in the final round and dropped down to 4th place, but only 3 shots out of 2nd place. I think the players were a little tired since we had back to back events and the wind really was very challenging during the final round and we just ran out of energy towards the end of the round. However, I think we can take some positives out of this performance, as we only finished 3 shots out of 2nd place and we did have some good rounds. I thought our first two rounds as a team were very impressive, as this was a very demanding course. We have a couple of weeks before our final event of the fall and we will use the time to work on our weaknesses and look to have a great season ending event at Lakewood Ranch”, coach Laura Brown commented.
The Lady Falcons return to competition November 2nd – 4th at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational in Lakewood Ranch, FL.
