Certified Pool Operator


Established by the National Swimming Pool Foundation, the CPO course is designed to provide the knowledge necessary to safely and efficiently manage and operate swimming pools and spas. Upon completion of this course, the student must demonstrate knowledge of the topics covered in the CPO course, outlined below, by successfully answering 75% of the questions on the NSPF written CPO certification exam.

Instructor:Richard Drolshagen is the owner of Perfect Pools, a nationally accredited, fully licensed and insured company that has been in the pool service business for over 15 years. He is an active member in the National Swimming Pool Foundation, Port Orange Chamber of Commerce and Association of Pool & Spa Professionals. Richard currently holds certifications as a Certified Pool Operator, Instructor and Inspector.

Volusia County Health Department Public Swimming Pool and Bathing Places (code 64E-9.018) states:“Any individual who services a public pool by maintaining the cleanliness, water quality and chemical balance of a public pool shall be certified. To ensure the pool technician is knowledgeable, said technician shall attend a training course of national recognition that is approved by the department.”

Topics covered include:

Water Chemistry (4-6 hours)

Filtration - Circulation (2-4 hours)

Maintenance (1-3 hours)

Operations and Safety (1-3 hours)

Calculations (1 - 2 hours)

Spa/Hot Tub (45 min – 1.5 hours)

Health Code (30 min – 1.5 hours)

Time: Week nights, 5-9 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. - Noon.  You must attend all four dates.
Location: Daytona State College, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32114, Building 110, room 249 
Fee: $275 (includes textbooks)
Text Books:The CPO Handbook and Pool Math Workbook must be reviewed prior to taking the class. Please arrange to pick up your textbooks at the college or request mailing to your home address. 
Bring to class: Please bring a valid photo ID,  textbooks, a calculator, highlighter marker, pad of paper and pen.
