General Education

General education at Daytona State College constitutes the academic preparation for participation in a pluralistic society and global community and is the basis for lifelong learning. It is a framework for the acquisition and use of broad bodies of knowledge and a foundation of intellectual, social and ethical skills and behaviors. Through the general education curriculum, students will:

• Acquire basic understandings of the humanities and cultural arts; mathematics; the social, behavioral and natural sciences; and an appreciation of their interrelatedness;
• Develop computer literacy and the ability to access, evaluate and manipulate data electronically;
• Develop effective written and oral communication skills;
• Develop mathematical understandings and computational skills;
• Develop evaluative and problem-solving skills to make informed judgments in a variety of contexts.

General education requirements comprise an important part of the hours necessary for the associate of arts, associate of applied science and associate of science degrees.
