Department Introduction

School of Modern Language

Welcome to the Daytona State College School of World Languages and Speech. In our classes, you will not simply learn the intricacies of the language but you will be guided through the discovery of the people who make those lands amazing. Whether you want to study languages for your career, are traveling to a distant land, or just want to know more about the place to which your family roots trace, the School of World Languages and Speech can help you though your journey.

There is an ancient proverb that states:

"A person who speaks two languages is worth two people."

Would you like to be worth two people to your employer? Knowing a second language can help provide a future for yourself and stability for your family.

From education:

"For those applying for a teaching position, displaying competency in a second language is definitely considered a strength." -Margaret A. Smith, D. Ed., Superintendent of Schools Volusia County School District

To health care:

"Communication is an essential part of caring for any patient. Caregivers who can help eliminate language barriers are highly sought to assist in providing the best care possible." -Wanda Gerson, Chief Nursing Officer, Halifax Health

All opportunities that can give you the desired edge!
