Course Title: The Disabled Experience

Course Description:
This course traces the history of the disabled experience in the United States and the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. The nature of disabling conditions includes developmental disorders, mental disorders, sensory disabilities, motor disabilities, and medical or other physical disorders. Chronic, temporary, and progressive conditions are explored. The course emphasizes the obstacles faced by disabled persons and the steps that increase opportunities for participation in all aspects of society. Etiquette is an intervention that can be practiced by all. Political, educational, vocational and therapeutic interventions address individual and group services to empower people with disabilities.
